DepressionThe lack of sleep increases the risk of depression and suicidal thoughts among teenagers, according to a study released at Columbia University in the U.S..

According to the research conducted among 659 students from 15 thousand primary and secondary education, the risk of depression among teens who usually go to bed after midnight is 24% higher than those who go to bed before 22: 00.

Those who go to bed later also have more suicidal thoughts: 20% more than among those who go to bed early, according to research published Friday in the journal “Sleep.”

“The results of this study provide additional evidence that short sleep may play a role in the analysis of the causes of depression,” write the authors of the study led by Professor James Ganwich, Columbia University.

Send teens to bed earlier would thus protect them from depression and suicidal thoughts, “they add.

The Academy of American Sleep Medicine recommends that teenagers get about nine hours a day
