Save the Lives of Mothers and Their Babies
Can be trained traditional birth attendants (APTS) to support mothers in childbirth and reduce infection. If they are trained to wash their hands, clean surfaces and cut the umbilical cord with a razor blade without using (or with a sharp knife or scissors boiled for 20 minutes before use) will significantly reduce the risk of infection. The APTS also can be trained to recognize women who are likely to require additional medical care and refer complicated deliveries to the hospital.
However, research in Pakistan (for Health-Pakistan) has shown that it is likely that the impact of APTS save only 3% of women who die during childbirth. Many more lives could be saved if women had good access to emergency care and experienced medical help if complications develop their deliveries.
Recent research shows that the following are the most effective ways to reduce deaths birth:
Good education for girls Girls who complete primary school are more likely to have fewer children and give birth later in life. They are also more likely to get prenatal care and have healthy babies.
The trained midwives APTS give good support to women with uncomplicated deliveries and reduce the likelihood of infection. However, the trained midwives who can help when the delivery is more complicated, are much more important to save lives.
Emergency medical care need arise difficult deliveries quickly to a well equipped health center or hospital to save the lives of mothers and their babies.
