Cholesterol

cholesterolCholesterol is the main sterol in the human body and precursor of all other steroids body. It is part of cell membranes, lipoproteins, bile acids and steroid hormones.

Cholesterol is an important constituent of gallstones, but its main pathological feature, is for the production of atherosclerosis of vital arteries, causing heart disease, stroke and peripheral vascular disease.

The origin of cholesterol in the body has two sources: external and produced by the body itself. Because the body can produce its own cholesterol, the possibility exists that people who do not consume cholesterol, high blood levels have to have a genetic-metabolic disorder that leads to this elevation. Why HDL cholesterol is good cholesterol? -part 2-

why hdl cholesterol is good cholesterol?Low density lipoprotein or LDL containing 47% cholesterol. Form of VLDL triglycerides and lose that free protein. Are the main transporter of cholesterol to tissues. LDL can be oxidized becoming harmful agents capable of initiating the atherosclerotic lesion.

Therefore, high levels of LDL are inconvenient in that it represents a higher probability of generating potentially harmful oxidized LDL particles.

High density lipoprotein HDL, contain proportionately more protein, 50% and 19% mostly esterified cholesterol. Are heterogeneous, several subclasses have been described, according to their density and protein composition. They are formed in the liver and intestine as small particles, rich in proteins, which contain relatively little cholesterol. Read the rest of this entry »

Why HDL cholesterol is good cholesterol? -part 1-

why HDL cholesterol is good cholesterol?High concentrations of HDL cholesterol in plasma are associated
a lower risk of coronary atherosclerosis. Conversely,
high levels of LDL cholesterol and triglycerides are
biological markers of increased cardiovascular risk.

Not all that glitters is not gold, goes the saying. Not all cholesterol is bad, is cooperation could add. In fact, no different cholesterols, neither good nor bad, it is the same molecule that is essential for life.

What makes it different is the type of lipoprotein is transported in the body, which is carried by particles of low density lipoprotein LDL in the circulation, is associated with increased risk of atherosclerosis and is often called “bad” cholesterol . In contrast, the cholesterol carried by particles of high density lipoprotein HDL in the bloodstream are associated with lower risk of atherosclerosis and is often called “good” cholesterol. High Blood Cholesterol and Treatments -part 2-

high blood cholesterol and treatmentsAt normal levels, cholesterol is not bad. On the contrary, is an essential raw material used by the body to build cell walls and produce hormones such as estrogen and testosterone.

The body produces its own supply of cholesterol in the liver and occurs naturally in all animal products (meat, eggs, milk and cheese). A problem arises only when the body can not use or remove excess supply and face high level of blood cholesterol.

Cholesterol is classified as a lipid. Travels through the bloodstream bound to proteins, forming complexes called lipoprotein. There are two main types of lipoprotein: low density lipoprotein (LDL), commonly known as “bad” cholesterol and high density lipoprotein (HDL) often called good cholesterol.
