What is a biopsy?
A biopsy is the removal of a sample of body tissue for examination. These samples are studied under a microscope (disease or pathology) to aid in diagnosis. Sometimes only a few cells are obtained by vacuuming or brushing. This is called cytology and is less aggressive, but provides less information and may not be enough.
Biopsies can be of several types:
Open surgical
When conventional surgery is performed by making an incision in the skin. Can be performed with local or general anesthesia depending on the area that requires analysis. Lets take part as a sample or remove the entire lesion.
Puncture or tru-cut
Using a needle and local anesthesia is obtained with a cylinder of the injury to be studied.
Aspiration
It uses a fine needle cytology and yields.
How is a biopsy?
The most common way is to perform a biopsy incision under local anesthesia, which enables access to the tissue that requires study, or a needle biopsy. This incision is usually closed with few stitches. For cytology is not usually necessary to perform the incision.
Sometimes a special instrument is used to facilitate reaching the tissue. In this special case we speak of biopsies:
- Endoscopic, laparoscopic, arthroscopic, bronchoscopic or thoracoscopic
- The biopsy is done by placing a video camera and instruments through the intestine (endoscopic), abdomen (laparoscopy), joint (arthroscopy), bronchi, or chest, respectively.
- Scan or ultrasound guided
- Ultrasound constitute aid or scanner to locate the right place. Then performed a needle biopsy or cytology.
It should be noted the doctor if you are taking anticoagulant medication (such as Sintrom) or antiplatelet (aspirin-like) or are allergic to local anesthetics.
After the biopsy the only care that are typically required washing the wound, pain and analgesia for suture removal, if you have, usually within 7-10 days.
